Background and History

Located in one of the most dynamic and multicultural cities in the world, this large university is one of America's top research institutions. With three campuses on more than 400 acres throughout the county, this southern university comprises 12 schools and colleges, serving undergrad and graduate students in nearly 350 majors and programs.

Every year, around 19,000 students from around the world pursue their academic goals at this vibrant and diverse university. Between classes, students and faculty have their choice of more than 25 restaurants and dining halls to visit, which are scattered throughout the sprawling campus. Maintaining all the food waste for these establishments put a large strain on the single facilities manager, who didn't have time or money to waste on unnecessary grease interceptor maintenance or pumping.

County regulations could allow for 3 to 6 months between pumps with proper monitoring, but many pumpers were pumping too frequently, costing the facilities manager precious time and money. SmartPro offered better visibility to the grease levels of the interceptors throughout the university, ensuring pumps were only happening when the interceptor was full. Audio and visual alarms, as well as digital notifications, signaled when it was time to pump or when the liquid level was too high. The cloud-based portal hosted all the data for streamlined information access and management.

Innovative ultrasonic monitoring also gave 24/7, real-time insight to the interceptor's performance, preventing back-ups and overflows throughout campus. Quality pump-outs at proper intervals helped reduce water jetting and cleaning costs, since grease waste was moving more effectively into the interceptors and not backing up into the pipes. Not only did this help provide a clean and well-functioning environment for the students and staff but offered peace of mind to the busy facilities manager.
