ZURN ELKAY'S PARTNERSHIP WITH ALLEGIANT STADIUM IN LAS VEGAS IS GROWING STRONGER

When the 65,000-seat stadium began construction in 2017, the Las Vegas Raiders chose Zurn as a water conservation partner whose products would help them deliver a world-class fan experience. From behind-the-scenes water safety and control to approximately 3,500 restroom fixtures, Zurn technology has proven to be both reliable and efficient. In all, it's saving more than 535 million gallons of water per year in one of the nation's most water-constrained cities.

SPRING 2024: ZURN UPGRADES SOME OF THE BUSIEST FACILITIES

Now, four years after opening, we're helping the Allegiant Stadium team reach new heights in their sustainability efforts. In the spring of 2024, Zurn upgraded several of the busiest restroom facilities to our newest technology in sensor flush valves and faucets. By employing hydropower and the resilience of a gear-driven ceramic cartridge in our newest sensor flush valves and faucets, Zurn innovators have tackled some of the biggest challenges faced by contractors and maintenance personnel. These best-in-class fixture upgrades remain aesthetically beautiful, while saving on labor, maintenance and the waste generated by spent batteries — a perfect combination to assist the Raiders in supporting their Zero Waste sustainability program.

Brendan Tague, lead engineer for Allegiant Stadium Operations, said sustainability is so important to the organization that it's become a line item in any project they take on. “It's very important to us, and this will be a prime example,” he said. “The technology is there, why not use it? The ROI is there for us to see and we're all doing our part for sustainability.”

ACTIVATING HYDROPOWER

Zurn's Hydro•X Power flush valves and faucets generate and store power from water flowing through the fixture, avoiding the costs of hardwiring or an endless supply of batteries. With only a few activations each day, each fixture harvests enough power to extend the battery life 10 years or more — the life of a commercial restroom. That means big savings for Allegiant Stadium. Tague said right now it costs about $450 every time they switch out batteries in all the restrooms.

Tague said saving the cost of batteries would be great by itself, but it goes beyond that. “Even more than the cost of the batteries is the cost of the labor to go do that,” he said. “Our engineers are not inexpensive…and just having them focus on other things rather than change batteries is huge to us.” The valves are designed with minimal maintenance in mind to ensure they stay up and running, leaving facility and maintenance engineers to focus on other matters.

GOODBYE SOLENOIDS

In addition to Hydro•X, all of the new flush valves and faucets deployed at Allegiant Stadium also feature Zurn's EZ Gear technology, using a gear-driven ceramic cartridge that is less susceptible to debris and buildup than a solenoid. The gears are also a lot smoother, eliminating water hammer that can take place with solenoids.

Chad Martin, Senior Manager Zurn Specifications, explained that EZ Gear faucets and flush valves outlast and outperform solenoids, which are a major pain point for architects, engineers and contractors.

“Solenoids can be sensitive to fine debris or particulates,” Martin said. “Ceramics are very hard and can handle those small amounts of debris. And it does away with that banging and the actual solenoid itself.”

Martin is excited about how these innovations will lower the total cost of ownership for owners and operations managers. He explained that the flush valves require no hard wiring or battery replacement and the faucets require no special wiring. That means quicker installation and lower costs over the life of the restroom. Martin said fixtures with both Hydro•X and a gear-driven ceramic cartridge means a total restroom solution that's reliable, sustainable and smart.

"The trouble-free service and equipment that Zurn provides is superior to its largest two competitors."

Brendan Tague

Lead Engineer, Allegiant Stadium Operations

Tague agreed. “The trouble-free service and equipment that Zurn provides is superior to its largest two competitors,” he said. “I can say that honestly and I will always go with Zurn.”

The Zurn hydopower test case is being conducted on men's and women's restrooms on one of the busiest concourses at Allegiant Stadium. With the goal of potentially upgrading the existing Zurn fixtures to the new Hydro•X and EZ Gear sensor faucets and flush valves throughout Allegiant Stadium, “I'm a really big fan of Zurn,” Tague said. “I really like the products. And I would love to see those new units go in across the board in this facility.”
